Columbia, South Carolina – Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, large hail, and destructive wind gusts are expected to move across South Carolina Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Columbia.

Forecasters say Monday poses the greatest severe weather threat, with portions of the state upgraded to a Moderate Risk (Level 4 of 5) by the Storm Prediction Center.

The most active window for severe storms is expected between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when a powerful line of storms moves through the region.

The primary threats include several tornadoes, a few of which could be strong (EF2 or greater). In addition, storms may produce damaging to destructive wind gusts up to 75 mph capable of knocking down trees and power lines.

Large hail is also possible, with hailstones around 1 inch in diameter in stronger storms.

The severe weather threat is expected to impact areas including Columbia, Sumter, Camden, Orangeburg, Aiken, Augusta, and surrounding communities.

Meteorologists urge residents to stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings, including weather apps, emergency alerts, and NOAA weather radios.

Because storms may intensify quickly, people should be ready to move to a sturdy building and seek shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor if a tornado warning is issued.
