St. Louis, Missouri – Residents stepping outside early Monday will feel a dramatic blast of Arctic air as wind chills plunge as low as −10° by the morning commute, following a rapid temperature drop and powerful winds sweeping across eastern Missouri overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, temperatures will fall sharply behind a strong cold front while northwest winds of 15 to 30 mph with gusts between 45 and 50 mph continue into Monday morning. The combination will push wind chill values between −10° and 10° across the region, with the coldest readings expected across northeast Missouri.

In the St. Louis metro area and southwest Illinois, wind chills will still fall into the single digits to near 10°, creating bitter conditions for anyone outdoors during the early commute. Cities along the I-70, I-64, and I-55 corridors, including St. Charles, Belleville, and Alton, may experience the sharpest wind gusts through sunrise.

Officials warn that the rapid temperature drop of 40 to 50 degrees in roughly 24 hours increases the risk of icy patches on untreated roads and sidewalks.

Residents should dress in multiple layers, limit time outdoors, and secure loose items that could still be blown around by lingering strong winds. The cold will persist into Tuesday before temperatures begin moderating across Missouri later in the week.
