Kansas City, Missouri – Drivers and utility crews across northern Missouri are bracing for damaging wind gusts approaching 60 mph this afternoon, a burst of power capable of snapping branches and knocking out electricity before conditions slowly ease overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, a strong spring storm system will drive northwest wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph beginning early Sunday afternoon and peaking into the evening hours. A High Wind Warning remains in effect for parts of northern Missouri where the strongest gusts are expected.
In the Kansas City metro, gusts may reach 52 to 58 mph between roughly 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., with nearby cities such as St. Joseph, Maryville, and Chillicothe potentially seeing similar or slightly stronger bursts of wind.
Travel could become difficult along Interstates 70, 35, and 29, especially for trucks, vans, and other high-profile vehicles. Sudden crosswinds on exposed bridges and open highways may force drivers to slow down quickly.
Emergency managers recommend securing trash cans, patio furniture, and other loose outdoor items before peak winds arrive. Utility providers also warn that falling limbs could lead to scattered power outages across northern Missouri.
Winds will gradually weaken overnight into Monday morning, but breezy conditions will continue across the Kansas City region into the start of the new workweek.
