Wilmington, North Carolina – Thunderstorms are expected to redevelop across southeast North Carolina by early afternoon Sunday, bringing the potential for isolated damaging wind gusts that could disrupt travel and outdoor plans through the evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, showers will expand across the region after 12 p.m. Sunday, with one or two storms capable of producing strong wind gusts and frequent lightning. The activity will impact coastal communities including Wilmington, Carolina Beach, and Oak Island, while inland areas such as Lumberton and Florence may see storms develop shortly after 1 p.m.
Drivers along Interstate 40, U.S. 17, and U.S. 74 could encounter sudden downpours and reduced visibility during heavier storms this afternoon. Temperatures will remain mild, with highs reaching around 72° in Wilmington, 74° in Lumberton, 68° in Myrtle Beach, and near 75° in Florence.
Storm activity may briefly ease during the evening before another round of showers and thunderstorms redevelops late tonight into early Monday morning as the next disturbance approaches the Carolina coast.
Emergency managers urge residents to move indoors when thunder is heard and secure loose outdoor items that could be blown around by gusty winds. Additional advisories or warnings could be issued if stronger storms organize overnight across southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina.
