Amarillo, TX – A strong cold front is moving across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles today, bringing rapidly falling temperatures and much colder wind chills throughout the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, strong northerly winds behind the cold front will make it feel about 10 degrees colder than the actual temperature as the day progresses.

Temperatures Falling Through the Day

Unlike most days when temperatures warm in the afternoon, forecasters say high temperatures occurred earlier in the day, and readings will continue cooling throughout the afternoon and evening.

By sunset Sunday evening, much of the Panhandles is expected to be near or below freezing.

Wind Chill Forecast

Wind chill values will drop steadily throughout the day across the region.

Examples of forecast wind chills include:

  • Amarillo: falling from the 50s this morning to around 25°F by evening
  • Boise City: dropping into the mid-teens tonight
  • Dalhart: near 20°F this evening
  • Beaver: near 12°F by late evening

Colder Air Monday Morning

Even colder temperatures are expected early Monday morning.

Forecast lows across the region include:

  • Amarillo: around 18°F
  • Dalhart: near 11°F
  • Guymon: around 13°F
  • Pampa: around 19°F

Wind chills Monday morning could fall into the single digits in some areas.

Safety Tips

Meteorologists recommend residents prepare for the colder weather:

  • Dress in warm layers
  • Bring pets indoors
  • Protect plants from freezing temperatures

Forecasters say the sudden drop in temperatures is a reminder that rapid weather changes can occur quickly across the High Plains, especially when strong cold fronts move through the region.
