Charleston, WV – West Virginia is facing a dramatic shift in weather over the next 48 hours as warm temperatures, severe storms, and even snow move through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a strong low-pressure system moving through the Great Lakes will bring a round of strong to severe thunderstorms overnight Sunday into Monday morning.
Forecasters say damaging wind gusts will be the main threat, though a brief tornado cannot be ruled out, especially as the line of storms moves across western and central parts of the state overnight.
Before the storms arrive, temperatures Sunday afternoon will surge into the 70s across much of the lowlands, with breezy conditions continuing into the evening.
Severe Weather Timing
- Late Sunday night – early Monday morning: Line of storms moves across West Virginia
- Main threat: damaging wind gusts
- Secondary threat: isolated tornadoes
Rapid Temperature Drop Monday
Behind the cold front, temperatures will drop quickly Monday, causing rain to transition into a wintry mix and then snow Monday afternoon and evening.
Expected Snowfall
- Lowlands: Less than 1 inch of accumulation
- Mountain areas: 1 to 4 inches possible, especially across the northeastern mountain ridges
Snow showers could linger into Tuesday morning, particularly in higher elevations like Snowshoe and surrounding mountain communities.
Temperatures will fall sharply Monday night with readings dropping into the 20s by Tuesday morning.
Midweek Outlook
Cold weather will persist through early Wednesday before temperatures gradually recover later in the week as calmer conditions return.
