Green Bay, WI – Travel across northeast Wisconsin could quickly become nearly impossible within the next few hours as heavy snow intensifies and wind gusts surge toward 50 mph, creating widespread whiteouts across highways from Rhinelander to Green Bay.

According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, snowfall rates across northern Wisconsin may reach 1 to 3 inches per hour Sunday morning, especially near Antigo, Crandon, and Rhinelander where totals could climb into the 8 to 12 inch range. At the same time, winds already gusting near 20–25 mph early Sunday will ramp up to 35–45 mph by late morning, with 40–50 mph gusts possible by afternoon.

The storm will not hit every region the same way. Northern counties including Vilas, Forest, and Oneida will remain locked in heavy snow for much of the day. Farther south across central Wisconsin and the Fox Valley — including Wausau, Shawano, Appleton, and Oshkosh — precipitation may briefly shift to a wintry mix of rain, sleet, and freezing rain late Sunday morning through early afternoon before colder air pushes the system back to all snow overnight.

Major routes including I-41, US-45, and Highway 29 could see sudden visibility drops under a quarter mile as blowing snow intensifies.

By midnight Monday, most of northeast Wisconsin transitions back to moderate or heavy snow with widespread blowing snow continuing into the early morning commute.

Conditions gradually improve Monday afternoon and evening, but additional advisories may remain in place as cleanup continues across the region. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and keep emergency supplies in their vehicles.
