Hennepin, Illinois – Drivers in Putnam County could face whiteout conditions and dangerous crosswinds by the Monday morning commute, as powerful wind gusts combine with falling snow to create near-blizzard conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday evening through Monday afternoon for Putnam County, including the town of Hennepin. Forecasters say snow totals up to 3 inches are possible, but the bigger threat will be winds gusting as high as 60 mph.

Those winds could whip falling snow into the air and create visibility below one-quarter mile, especially on exposed rural roads and open farmland across the Illinois River Valley. Travel along Illinois Route 71 and nearby county highways could quickly become hazardous as blowing snow reduces visibility and creates slick patches.

Tree branches may also come down under the strain of strong gusts, which could lead to isolated power outages across the county.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and consider delaying travel Monday morning, especially if whiteout conditions develop. Drivers who must travel should slow down and keep emergency supplies in their vehicles.

The strongest winds and worst visibility are expected from late Sunday night through the midday hours Monday, with conditions gradually improving later Monday afternoon as the system moves east.
