Rockford, Illinois – Drivers across northern Illinois could face whiteout conditions by the Monday morning commute as strong winds combine with accumulating snow across the Rockford region.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday evening through Monday evening for Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, and Lee counties. The system could bring 3 to 5 inches of snow, while wind gusts up to 50 mph may whip the snow into the air and dramatically reduce visibility.
Cities including Rockford, Belvidere, Rochelle, Dixon, Oregon, and Byron are all in the watch area. Open rural areas along Interstate 90, U.S. Route 20, and Illinois Route 2 could see the worst conditions as blowing snow drops visibility below one-quarter mile at times.
The storm may affect both Monday’s morning and evening commutes, with drifting snow and slick pavement making travel hazardous. Strong gusts could also snap small tree limbs and lead to isolated power outages.
Residents should prepare for difficult travel, secure outdoor items, and allow extra time for Monday commutes. Drivers who must travel should slow down and keep emergency supplies in their vehicles.
The strongest winds and worst visibility are expected late Sunday night through Monday afternoon, with conditions gradually improving Monday evening as the system moves east.
