Pueblo, CO – A volatile weather setup across southern Colorado could quickly spark fast-moving fires today as powerful winds and extremely dry air combine across the San Luis Valley and surrounding regions.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday across the San Luis Valley, including Alamosa, Monte Vista, and surrounding communities. Northwest winds are expected to sustain near 35 mph with gusts between 50 and 55 mph, while humidity levels may drop as low as 9 to 12 percent, creating conditions where fires could spread rapidly.
Any spark — including discarded cigarettes, equipment use, or outdoor burning — could ignite fires capable of spreading quickly across dry grass and brush.
At the same time, a powerful storm system will bring damaging winds across much of southern Colorado. Gusts in the central mountains could reach 75 mph, while the eastern plains may see northerly winds near 65 mph through Sunday evening.
Travel may become difficult on east-west highways including U.S. 50 and U.S. 160, where strong crosswinds and areas of blowing dust could reduce visibility. Across the central mountains, 2 to 4 inches of snow combined with strong winds may create blowing snow and hazardous driving conditions on higher passes.
Officials urge residents to avoid activities that could spark a fire and secure loose outdoor objects as strong winds continue through the evening hours. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
