Bangor, Maine – A brief burst of snow and freezing rain early Monday could coat roads with a thin layer of ice across central and northern Maine, creating slick travel conditions during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect early Monday morning across large parts of the state. Northern areas including Aroostook, northern Penobscot, northern Piscataquis, and northern Somerset counties will see the advisory from 4 a.m. until noon Monday, while areas farther south including Bangor, Brewer, Lincoln, Dover-Foxcroft, and Calais will be under the advisory from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday.

The system is expected to produce less than 1 inch of snow along with a light glaze of ice, enough to make untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks slippery. Even minimal ice accumulation can quickly create hazardous driving conditions when temperatures hover near freezing.

Travel impacts are likely along Interstate 95 through Bangor and Millinocket, as well as rural routes across the North Woods and Downeast interior communities.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check NewEngland511.org for updated road conditions before heading out Monday morning. Conditions should gradually improve by late morning as temperatures rise and precipitation tapers.
