Princeton, Illinois – Travel across parts of north-central Illinois could quickly become dangerous by 7 p.m. Sunday as powerful winds whip light snowfall into whiteout conditions across Bureau County.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday until 1 p.m. Monday. Snow totals may only reach 1 to 3 inches, but wind gusts up to 60 mph will create severe blowing and drifting snow capable of reducing visibility to near zero at times.

The strongest impacts are expected along exposed roadways near Princeton and across rural Bureau County, where open farmland allows winds to accelerate. Drivers along Interstate 80 and Illinois Route 26 could encounter sudden visibility drops overnight into the Monday morning commute. Even minor snowfall may rapidly drift across lanes.

Officials warn that the high winds could also snap tree limbs and lead to isolated power interruptions. Emergency managers recommend avoiding non-essential travel Sunday night and early Monday. If travel is unavoidable, motorists should carry blankets, a charged phone, water, and a winter survival kit.

Road conditions across Illinois can change quickly during blowing snow events. Updates from the Illinois Department of Transportation are available at GettingAroundIllinois.com.

Blizzard conditions are expected to ease after 1 p.m. Monday, though gusty winds and drifting snow may linger into the afternoon. Additional advisories could follow if conditions worsen overnight.
