Birmingham, Alabama – Drivers and homeowners across Central Alabama have a narrow window to prepare as overnight temperatures plunge into the low-20s by early Tuesday, cold enough to freeze exposed pipes, damage early summer garden plants, and create frost on elevated roadways before the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, widespread freezing temperatures will develop across the region by daybreak Tuesday and repeat again Wednesday morning. Forecast lows range from 21°F near Hamilton to around 23°F in Birmingham, Gadsden, and Anniston, with mid-20s expected in Tuscaloosa and Clanton. Farther south, Montgomery and Troy could dip to 28–29°F.
The cold follows Sunday night’s storm system and will settle across much of north and central Alabama through midweek. Counties along the I-65 corridor from Cullman through Birmingham to Montgomery, along with I-20 between Tuscaloosa and Anniston, could see patchy frost on bridges and overpasses during the early commute Tuesday.
Residents should bring sensitive plants indoors or cover them overnight, especially early vegetable or summer crop seedlings. Pet owners are urged to provide insulated shelter, and homeowners should protect outdoor plumbing where possible.
Temperatures remain near freezing again Wednesday morning, with lows mostly 27–31°F across central Alabama. Additional cold weather advisories may be issued if temperatures trend lower overnight.
