Mid-South Weather Update: Memphis Faces Severe Storms Sunday Before 39°F Cold Monday

Memphis, TN – Strong storms could develop across the Memphis metro Sunday afternoon as a powerful cold front moves toward the Mid-South, bringing the risk of severe weather followed by a dramatic temperature drop.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, showers and thunderstorms are expected after 4 p.m. Sunday, with a 50% chance of precipitation during the afternoon and increasing storm intensity into the evening. Some storms could become severe as south winds strengthen to 15–25 mph with gusts approaching 40 mph across Shelby County.

Storm activity will continue overnight with rain before 1 a.m., followed by a brief rain–snow mix between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Monday as colder air pushes into western Tennessee. Temperatures will drop quickly to around 31°F by early Monday morning, and little or no snow accumulation is expected.

Behind the system, a sharp cooldown arrives Monday. Highs will reach only around 39°F, nearly 40 degrees colder than Sunday afternoon, with gusty northwest winds affecting areas including Memphis, Bartlett, Germantown, and Collierville.

Monday night brings the coldest air of the week with temperatures falling to around 23°F, creating a freeze risk for early spring vegetation across the Mid-South.

Conditions improve Tuesday as sunshine returns and temperatures slowly rebound across the Memphis region.
