Denver, CO – Dangerous wind and fire conditions are developing across the Denver metro this afternoon as strong southwest winds and dry air combine with blowing dust along the Front Range.
According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. Saturday while a High Wind Watch continues through Sunday evening for the Denver metro and surrounding Front Range communities. Winds today could gust as high as 55 mph, creating patchy blowing dust and increasing wildfire risk.
Temperatures will climb to around 77°F this afternoon, but the warm conditions will not last long. Gusty southwest winds between 26 and 36 mph will intensify through the afternoon, potentially impacting travel along Interstate 25, Interstate 70, and U.S. Highway 36 across the Denver metro area.
A strong cold front arrives overnight. Rain may develop before midnight, then transition to snow between midnight and early morning Sunday as temperatures drop sharply. Wind gusts could reach 50 mph overnight, and while snowfall totals are expected to remain light, blowing snow could briefly reduce visibility.
Sunday will feel dramatically colder with highs struggling to reach 35°F, accompanied by breezy north winds across Denver, Aurora, Lakewood, and Thornton.
Conditions begin improving Monday as temperatures rebound into the mid-50s, followed by a rapid warm-up into the 70s by Tuesday across the Front Range.
