Phoenix, AZ – A surge of early-season desert heat is building across south-central Arizona, with temperatures expected to climb above 100°F by midweek and potentially reach 109°F later in the week.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, an Extreme Heat Watch is in effect from 11 a.m. Thursday through Sunday evening across much of south-central and southwest Arizona, including Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Glendale, and Tempe. Forecasters warn that afternoon highs during the event could reach 103°F to 109°F, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illness.
Temperatures will steadily climb over the next several days. Phoenix is expected to reach around 92°F today, followed by 91°F Sunday and 92°F Monday under mostly sunny skies. The real heat arrives Tuesday and Wednesday when temperatures surge to 97°F and near 101°F, marking the first triple-digit heat of the season for many areas of the Valley.
The extreme heat will intensify late in the week across communities including Peoria, Surprise, Goodyear, Avondale, and Buckeye, where prolonged afternoon sun and light winds will allow temperatures to climb rapidly.
Health officials urge residents to drink plenty of water, limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion should move to a cool area immediately.
Additional heat advisories may be issued as the week progresses across the Phoenix metro.
