Denver, Colorado – Drivers along Colorado’s Front Range could face dangerous crosswinds overnight as a powerful cold front sweeps through late tonight, triggering wind gusts that may reach 65 mph through Sunday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, a High Wind Watch is in effect from 11 p.m. tonight through 6 p.m. Sunday for much of the northeastern plains and areas along and east of Interstate 25. Behind the cold front, strong north winds of 30 to 40 mph are expected, with peak gusts potentially reaching 55 to 65 mph.
Communities including Denver, Greeley, Fort Morgan, Sterling, Akron, and Limon sit within the area where the strongest winds may develop. Gusty conditions are also expected near the Palmer Divide and along the I-25 corridor, where sudden crosswinds could make travel difficult for trucks, RVs, and other high-profile vehicles.
Transportation officials warn that strong wind gusts could impact major highways including I-25, Interstate 76, and U.S. Highway 34, particularly overnight into Sunday morning.
The cold front will also bring an end to the recent stretch of above-normal warmth across the region. Temperatures will turn cooler Sunday as the strong winds continue across the plains.
Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor objects and prepare for potentially hazardous travel conditions as the strongest winds develop overnight into Sunday afternoon.
