Austin, Texas – Central Texas residents could experience a dramatic temperature swing within 24 hours as near-record warmth Sunday gives way to a sharp cold front that may drop some areas close to freezing by early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin–San Antonio, afternoon highs Sunday will surge into the upper 80s and low 90s, including around 93°F in Austin and near 90°F in San Antonio. The warm conditions could approach record highs across parts of the region before a strong cold front sweeps through late Sunday.
Behind the front, temperatures will plunge overnight. By early Monday morning, lows could fall to around 38°F in Austin and near 43°F in San Antonio, with even colder readings expected across the Hill Country. Cities such as Fredericksburg, Kerrville, and Llano may dip into the lower 30s, creating a risk of freezing temperatures.
The sudden cooldown may threaten early spring vegetation and blooming plants, particularly in rural Hill Country communities along the Edwards Plateau and the Escarpment.
Cold wind chills may also linger through Tuesday morning before temperatures gradually rebound midweek. Forecasters say warmer spring conditions should return across Central Texas by the middle of the week and continue into next weekend.
