Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Drivers across western Pennsylvania could see rain rapidly change to a wintry mix Monday evening as temperatures plunge and gusty winds sweep across the region, creating slick conditions during the late commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, precipitation chances jump to 90–100 percent Monday, with rain during the morning transitioning to snow and mixed precipitation by late afternoon and evening across much of western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, and eastern Ohio.

Communities including Pittsburgh, Latrobe, Indiana, and Wheeling could see rain through midday Monday before colder air pushes in. The changeover may begin after 3–6 p.m. Monday, when surface temperatures begin sliding toward the upper 30s and eventually below freezing overnight.

Roadways such as I-79, I-70, I-376 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike may become slick as the rain-to-snow transition occurs. In higher terrain near Franklin and Clarion, snow probabilities increase into Monday night, raising the risk for accumulating snow before daybreak Tuesday.

Strong wind gusts could worsen travel conditions. Forecast guidance shows gusts climbing to 30–40 mph from Sunday night through Monday, capable of reducing visibility in heavier bursts of snow.

The region also faces a sharp temperature drop. After highs reach near 65°F Sunday afternoon, readings fall quickly Monday night and could bottom out near the mid-20s by Tuesday morning, allowing any untreated surfaces to freeze.

Residents should monitor road conditions, secure outdoor items before winds increase, and prepare for rapidly changing weather Monday evening. Additional advisories or winter weather alerts may be issued as the system approaches early next week.
