Jackson County, FL – Deputies arrested a Cottondale man Thursday after a crash investigation led to the discovery of more than a pound of marijuana.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling on Highway 90 near Cottondale due to a traffic violation on Thursday, March 12.

Authorities said the vehicle turned onto Cumbaa Road, where the driver allegedly lost control and left the roadway near the intersection of Cumbaa Road and Tharps Road, entering a wooded area.

When deputies arrived, officials reported the vehicle was still running but unoccupied. Deputies searched the surrounding area and located a man exiting nearby woods. The individual was later identified as Elijah Johnson Jr. of Cottondale, according to the sheriff’s office.

Johnson was detained and taken into custody.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies said they located packaging materials commonly used to transport marijuana. Investigators also discovered a backpack along Cumbaa Road containing approximately 1.19 pounds of marijuana, authorities reported.

Johnson was transported to the Jackson County Jail.

According to the sheriff’s office, Johnson is being charged with:

  • Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer
  • Tampering with Evidence
  • Possession of Marijuana Over 20 Grams

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
