Old Forge, New York – Snow will begin piling up across the Adirondacks by late Friday morning, with bursts of heavy snowfall expected to cut visibility to less than a half mile and make travel difficult through Saturday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Storm Warning takes effect at 11 a.m. Friday for Hamilton County and northern Herkimer County, including Old Forge, Long Lake, Eagle Bay, and Wells. The warning remains in effect until 2 p.m. Saturday as a prolonged round of snow spreads across the central Adirondacks.

Forecasters expect widespread totals between 5 and 11 inches, with peak snowfall rates reaching 1 inch per hour Friday afternoon and overnight. Gusty winds up to 35 mph may produce blowing snow across exposed roads, especially along Route 28, Route 30, and higher terrain across the western Adirondacks.

Communities such as Big Moose, Sabattis, and McKeever could see steadily accumulating snow through Friday night as lake-enhanced bands linger over the region. Drivers heading into the Adirondacks for the weekend should prepare for snow-covered highways and sudden visibility drops.

Emergency officials recommend keeping flashlights, extra food, and water in vehicles in case travel delays occur. Snow is expected to continue into early Saturday afternoon before gradually tapering, though slick roads may persist across the Adirondack interior even after the heaviest snow ends.
