Illinois–Iowa – Wind rattles street signs along the Mississippi River this morning as clouds thicken over the Quad Cities. Temperatures hover near 30°F, but the calm start won’t last. A surge of stronger winds and rain will sweep through the region before the weekend ends with snow and biting cold.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, a Wind Advisory begins late this morning and continues through Friday afternoon. Southerly winds increase through the day, shifting west later with gusts between 40 and 45 mph across eastern Iowa and western Illinois.

Drivers along Interstate 80, I-74, and I-280 may notice crosswinds pushing vehicles on exposed bridges over the Mississippi. High-profile trucks and trailers will feel the strongest impacts. Secure trash bins and outdoor decorations before winds strengthen.

Rain develops across the region later today and becomes more widespread through the evening. Meteorologists expect around a 60 percent chance of rain, with gusty winds continuing across Davenport, Moline, Bettendorf, and Rock Island.

Friday brings a brief break in precipitation but not the wind. Sunshine returns at times, yet west winds could still gust near 50 mph, whipping across open farmland and riverfront roads.

Clouds increase again Saturday as another system approaches the Midwest. Rain becomes likely across the Quad Cities by Sunday, with precipitation chances reaching 100 percent by afternoon. Wet pavement and steady rainfall could slow travel for spring break drivers using I-80 and I-88 corridors.

Colder air surges in Sunday night. Rain may flip to heavy snow at times, while temperatures crash toward 13°F by early Monday. Gusty winds could produce blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.

Plan extra travel time Sunday evening and watch bridges for sudden slick spots if temperatures plunge quickly. Flash freezing becomes more likely when wet pavement meets rapidly falling temperatures.

Milder spring air may return late next week as temperatures trend above normal heading toward the first day of spring.
