Omaha, Nebraska – Outdoor burning or even a small spark could rapidly ignite grass fires across eastern Nebraska Thursday afternoon as powerful winds and extremely dry air combine to create dangerous fire conditions across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon until 9 p.m. Thursday for much of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa. Southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 48 mph are expected during the afternoon while relative humidity drops to around 19%, creating an environment where fires could spread quickly.

The concern includes Omaha, Lincoln, Fremont, Norfolk and surrounding counties, where open fields and dry vegetation could allow flames to move rapidly. Fire officials warn that discarded cigarettes, outdoor equipment sparks or unattended burns could trigger fast-moving grass fires.

Wind speeds are expected to strengthen even more after sunset as they shift northwest. Gusts could reach 50 to 60 mph overnight, increasing the risk of property damage and scattered power outages across eastern Nebraska.

Residents should avoid outdoor burning, secure loose items and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions through Thursday evening.

Forecasters also note that a new weather system could bring wintry precipitation and potential travel impacts late Saturday into Sunday, with more updates expected as the weekend approaches.
