Georgia — Lightning flashes across metro Atlanta this morning while steady rain drums against rooftops and highways. Wind pushes sheets of rain across the city, creating slick conditions for early commuters.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a line of strong to severe thunderstorms is moving across north and central Georgia. The primary threat includes damaging wind gusts near 30 mph, frequent lightning, heavy rainfall, and the possibility of brief spin-up tornadoes or small hail.
Travel conditions could deteriorate quickly across Interstate 75, Interstate 85, and I-285 as bursts of heavy rain reduce visibility. Drivers across Fulton, DeKalb, and Cobb counties should slow down on wet pavement and watch for ponding water in low-lying areas.
Periods of heavy rain may drop between a quarter and a half inch in parts of the Atlanta metro before storms move east later in the day. Once the front clears, skies gradually brighten and cooler air filters into the region.
Clearer skies take over heading into Friday with sunshine returning across north Georgia. Afternoon highs reach about 66°F, bringing calmer spring weather to Atlanta, Marietta, Sandy Springs, and surrounding suburbs.
By Saturday, March 14, Atlanta settles into a pleasant stretch of early spring warmth. Bright sunshine and mild air push highs to around 74°F, making it one of the nicest days of the upcoming stretch. Parks, trails, and outdoor patios across the city could see larger crowds as residents take advantage of the sunshine.
Clouds increase again Sunday as another system approaches the Southeast. Showers may return late Sunday night and could impact travel for spring break visitors passing through Atlanta’s busy highways and airport.
Meteorologists say a broader warming trend may develop across the Southeast late next week, signaling stronger spring warmth as March continues.
