Cleveland, Ohio – Spring break travelers heading through northern Ohio could encounter a blast of winter-like cold as overnight temperatures fall to around 20°F between March 16 and March 20, creating icy early-morning conditions across the Cleveland metro area.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a large portion of the eastern United States—from Minnesota down to East Texas and east to the Atlantic coast—shows a 60–70% probability of below-normal temperatures during that timeframe. The Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region sit within the colder core of this air mass.

Cities including Cleveland, Akron, and Youngstown could see overnight temperatures dipping close to 20°F, particularly during clear nights when winds relax and temperatures drop rapidly before sunrise.

Daytime highs may rebound into the 30s and low 40s, but those readings will still run below typical mid-March averages for northern Ohio.

Drivers traveling along Interstate 90, Interstate 71, and Interstate 77 during spring break should watch for patchy frost and icy spots on bridges and elevated roadways during early morning hours.

Lake Erie could also contribute to occasional lake-effect snow showers, which may briefly reduce visibility along sections of I-90 near the lakeshore.

The colder pattern may persist through March 20, and additional advisories could follow if overnight temperatures continue dipping toward 20°F across northern Ohio during the opening days of spring.
