According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a broad section of the eastern United States—from Minnesota down to East Texas and east to the Atlantic coast—shows a 60–70% probability of below-normal temperatures during that timeframe. The Great Lakes region, including Michigan, sits within the colder core of this air mass.
Cities including Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Flint could see overnight lows dipping to around 20°F, especially during clear nights when winds relax and temperatures fall rapidly before sunrise.
Daytime highs may rebound into the 30s and low 40s, but those readings will still run below typical mid-March averages for southeast Michigan.
Drivers traveling along major routes including Interstate 75, Interstate 94, and Interstate 96 during spring break should watch for patchy frost and icy spots on bridges and elevated roadways during the early morning commute.
Areas closer to the Great Lakes may experience occasional lake-effect snow showers, which could briefly reduce visibility along portions of I-94 and I-75.
The colder pattern may persist through March 20, and additional advisories could follow if overnight temperatures continue dropping toward 20°F across southeast Michigan during the opening days of spring.
