Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Spring break travelers arriving in Philadelphia may face a sharp return to winter as overnight temperatures drop to around 25°F between March 16 and March 20, bringing freezing conditions to southeastern Pennsylvania just days before the official start of spring.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a large portion of the eastern United States—from Minnesota down to East Texas and eastward to the Atlantic coast—shows a 60–70% probability of below-normal temperatures during that period. Pennsylvania sits near the center of that colder pattern.
Across southeastern Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Allentown, and Reading could see overnight temperatures dipping to around 25°F, especially during clear nights when heat escapes quickly after sunset.
Daytime highs may rebound into the upper 30s and mid-40s, but those readings will still run several degrees below typical mid-March levels.
Drivers traveling along Interstate 95, Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway), and Interstate 476 during spring break should watch for patchy frost on bridges and elevated roadways during early morning hours, particularly before sunrise.
Pedestrians and commuters along the Delaware River waterfront and Center City corridors may also notice colder wind chills during early morning and late evening hours.
The colder pattern may persist through March 20, and additional advisories could follow if overnight temperatures continue dropping toward the mid-20s across southeastern Pennsylvania during the opening week of spring.
