Chicago, Illinois – Drivers across the Chicago metro could face dangerous crosswinds late tonight into Friday morning, as a powerful surge of wind pushes across northern Illinois with gusts potentially reaching 60 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, southerly winds will strengthen overnight with gusts increasing to 45 to 50 mph late tonight, before intensifying further Friday morning. Winds are expected to shift west by early Friday with peak gusts between 50 and 60 mph, especially between 6 a.m. and noon Friday.
The strongest winds will impact communities across the Chicago metropolitan area including Cook, DuPage, Lake, and Will counties. Major transportation routes such as Interstate 90, Interstate 94, and Interstate 55 may see difficult driving conditions, particularly for trucks, buses, and other high-profile vehicles.
Utility companies warn the strongest gusts could bring down tree limbs and power lines, leading to scattered power outages across parts of northern Illinois.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and decorations before winds increase overnight. Drivers should also use extra caution on open roads and elevated bridges during the Friday morning commute.
Wind speeds are expected to gradually decrease by late Friday afternoon, though breezy conditions may linger into the evening.
