Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Drivers across western Pennsylvania could feel strong crosswinds on highways by Friday morning, as wind gusts approaching 40 mph spread across the region and create difficult travel conditions on elevated roads and bridges.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Wind Advisory begins at 8 a.m. Friday for most of the region and continues through midnight Friday night, while higher elevations of Tucker County, West Virginia may see advisory conditions beginning earlier Friday morning. Gusts across cities including Pittsburgh, Washington, Butler, New Castle, and Wheeling could peak between 35 and 40 mph through the afternoon and evening.

Major travel corridors such as Interstate 79, Interstate 70, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) may experience sudden gusts, particularly on exposed bridges and ridges. The strongest winds are expected during the afternoon hours as the pressure gradient tightens across the Upper Ohio Valley.

Wind speeds today remain lighter, generally producing gusts between 20 and 30 mph, but the increase Friday could make driving difficult for trucks, vans, and other high-profile vehicles.

Residents should secure outdoor items such as trash bins, patio furniture, and decorations ahead of the stronger winds. Utility crews also warn isolated outages are possible if tree limbs are blown into power lines.

The advisory remains in effect through Friday night, and additional weather updates may follow if stronger wind potential develops across western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia.
