Chicago, Illinois – Drivers across northern Illinois could face dangerous crosswinds and difficult travel beginning Thursday night, as a powerful surge of non-thunderstorm winds pushes across the Chicago region and strengthens into Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, sustained winds near 30 to 40 mph with gusts around 45 mph are expected beginning Thursday night, with the strongest conditions developing between 6 a.m. and noon Friday. Forecasters say some locations could see peak gusts exceeding 55 mph, though exact wind strength remains uncertain.

The strongest winds are expected north of Interstate 80, impacting major corridors including Interstate 90, Interstate 94, and Interstate 294 through the Chicago metro area. High-profile vehicles traveling along exposed roadways and bridges may experience sudden crosswinds during the morning commute.

Utilities across northern Illinois are also monitoring the system as wind gusts above 50 mph can increase the risk of tree damage and scattered power outages, especially where soils remain wet from recent precipitation.

Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and decorations, as loose objects can become airborne in strong wind bursts. Drivers should also use extra caution on open highways and elevated roadways.

Wind impacts may continue into Friday afternoon across the Chicago region, and additional advisories could be issued if forecast wind speeds increase.
