Detroit, Michigan – Drivers across Michigan could face rapidly changing road conditions this weekend as a widespread winter storm threatens to bring snow, freezing rain, and heavy rain beginning late Saturday night and lasting into Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, forecasters have high confidence a strong storm system will impact the entire state, though the exact placement of snow versus freezing rain remains uncertain. The system is expected to move into the Great Lakes late Saturday night, spreading snowfall across much of Michigan before temperatures begin shifting precipitation types on Sunday.

Northern communities including Gaylord, Traverse City, and Sault Ste. Marie are currently favored to remain mostly snow, which could lead to accumulating snowfall and slippery travel along I-75 and US-131 corridors.

Across central and western Michigan, including Grand Rapids and Lansing, snow may transition to a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain Sunday, increasing the risk of icy roads and possible power issues if ice accumulates on tree limbs and power lines.

Further south toward Detroit, Flint, and Ann Arbor, the storm could shift toward rain or a rain-mix scenario, though temperatures hovering near freezing could still create hazardous travel at times along I-94 and I-96.

Breezy winds may also develop statewide, worsening travel conditions during heavier bursts of precipitation. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates, prepare for changing road conditions, and limit unnecessary travel if freezing rain develops.

The system is expected to transition back to colder air and snow before tapering off Monday morning, with additional advisories or winter storm watches possible as the track becomes clearer later this week.
