Detroit, Michigan – Strong winds and colder air are set to sweep across southeast Michigan, with wind gusts approaching 45 to 50 mph by Friday as a rain and snow system moves into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, northwest winds will begin increasing late Thursday before peaking Friday when gusts across Detroit, Ann Arbor, Pontiac, Flint, and Monroe could exceed 45 mph. The strongest winds are expected during the daytime Friday hours as a storm system spreads precipitation across the state.

Temperatures will remain near seasonal levels Thursday with highs in the mid-30s to low 40s, but conditions will deteriorate early Friday. Meteorologists say a mix of rain and snow is likely Friday morning, with a 60–80% chance of precipitation across southeast Michigan.

The combination of gusty winds and bursts of snow could create reduced visibility and slick stretches along I-75, I-94, and I-96, particularly during the morning commute. Wind gusts near 50 mph may also knock down small branches or cause isolated power interruptions.

Another round of accumulating snow may develop late Saturday night into Sunday, bringing additional travel concerns across Michigan as colder air settles over the region.

Residents should secure loose outdoor objects and prepare for windy conditions through Friday. Additional advisories or wind alerts may be issued as the stronger wind field approaches the Great Lakes.
