Jeffersonville, Indiana – Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes may develop across southern Indiana Wednesday afternoon, placing several Ohio River communities under a Tornado Watch until 6 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 43 covers 11 counties in southern Indiana, including Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Washington, and Scott counties. The watch includes cities such as Jeffersonville, New Albany, Scottsburg, and Salem.
Storms forming along the Ohio River could produce wind gusts exceeding 60 mph along with the potential for brief tornadoes. Heavy rainfall may also reduce visibility along Interstate 65 and Interstate 64, especially during the afternoon commute.
Communities near the Kentucky border, including Clarksville and Corydon, should monitor weather alerts closely as storms strengthen moving east across the region.
Emergency managers recommend having multiple ways to receive warnings and identifying a safe shelter location in advance. If a tornado warning is issued, residents should move immediately to a basement or interior room on the lowest level of a sturdy structure.
The severe weather risk will continue through early evening Wednesday as storms track across the Ohio Valley. Additional alerts may be issued if stronger storms develop.
