Cleveland, Ohio – Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes could rapidly develop across Northeast Ohio Wednesday afternoon, placing the Cleveland metro and several major travel corridors under a Tornado Watch through 5 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, Tornado Watch 42 remains in effect for 14 counties across North Central and Northeast Ohio. The watch includes Cuyahoga, Summit, Stark, Lorain, and Mahoning counties, covering major cities such as Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Lorain, and Youngstown.
Storms moving across the region could produce wind gusts up to 70 mph, brief tornado spin-ups, and intense rainfall that may sharply reduce visibility on Interstate 90, Interstate 77, and Interstate 71 during the afternoon commute. Communities including Elyria, Medina, Ravenna, and Warren may see rapidly strengthening thunderstorms capable of damaging trees and power lines.
Lake Erie shoreline communities from Lorain to Ashtabula could also experience strong wind bursts as storms move northeast across the region. Drivers should be prepared for sudden downpours and possible debris on roadways.
Residents are urged to keep phones charged and enable emergency alerts. If a tornado warning is issued, move immediately to a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and stay away from windows.
The severe weather threat will continue across Northeast Ohio through late Wednesday afternoon, and additional warnings may be issued as storms track across the region.
