Lake Charles, Louisiana – Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes could rapidly develop across much of Louisiana through the late afternoon, putting nearly 20 parishes on alert for sudden wind damage and rotating storms before 6 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 44 covers 19 parishes across central, western, and northern Louisiana until 6 p.m. CDT. Areas included stretch from the Texas border eastward through Rapides Parish and north toward Ouachita Parish, placing communities from Lake Charles to Monroe within the watch zone.

Storms moving across Allen, Beauregard, and Calcasieu parishes could produce wind gusts exceeding 60 mph along with isolated tornado development. Drivers along Interstate 10 near Lake Charles and Interstate 49 near Alexandria may encounter sudden downpours and sharply reduced visibility during the afternoon commute.

Central Louisiana communities including Alexandria, Natchitoches, and Winnfield should remain alert for rapidly intensifying thunderstorms. Farther north, residents in Monroe, Jonesboro, and surrounding Ouachita and Jackson parishes could also see strong storms capable of brief tornado spin-ups.

Emergency managers urge residents to keep phones charged and have multiple ways to receive warnings. If a warning is issued, move immediately to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and avoid windows.

Storm threats remain possible across the watch area through early evening Wednesday, and additional alerts could be issued if stronger storm cells develop.
