Minneapolis, Minnesota – Drivers across Minnesota and western Wisconsin could face slick roads by late Thursday night as a fast-moving system brings rain, snow, and strengthening winds to the region.

According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, precipitation will begin late Thursday morning in western Minnesota and early Thursday afternoon in western Wisconsin, starting as a mix of rain and snow. Temperatures climbing into the 40 to 45 degree range Thursday afternoon may turn much of the precipitation to rain before colder air pushes back in overnight.

The system will gradually transition back to snow late Thursday night, especially across northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin, where the heaviest accumulation is expected. Current projections show 4 to 6 inches possible near Hayward, Wisconsin, while communities such as Rice Lake and Ladysmith could see 1 to 3 inches by Friday morning.

Farther south, including the Twin Cities, Rochester, and Eau Claire, snowfall totals are expected to remain lighter, generally around an inch or less, as warmer air limits accumulation.

Wind will also become a factor. Gusty conditions are expected to increase Thursday afternoon and continue into Friday, potentially creating reduced visibility in areas where snow is falling.

Forecasters say this active weather pattern will not end with this system. Another round of winter weather could develop this weekend, and officials are continuing to monitor the potential for additional snow and strong winds across the Upper Midwest.
