Colorado – Bright sun rises over the Front Range this morning, but a sharp shift toward dry, windy spring weather is setting up a dangerous fire-weather pattern across the Denver metro area.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, a Fire Weather Watch remains in effect Thursday morning through Thursday evening across the I-25 corridor, including Denver, Boulder, and surrounding counties. Forecasters expect west winds between 20 and 30 mph with gusts reaching 45 mph, while relative humidity may drop as low as 13 percent.

Those ingredients create prime conditions for rapid wildfire spread across dry grasslands along the Front Range. Even small sparks from outdoor equipment, vehicles, or discarded cigarettes could quickly ignite fires.

Denver, Aurora, Thornton, and Broomfield all sit within the watch zone. Areas along Interstate 25, U.S. 36, and E-470 may experience the strongest afternoon wind bursts as warm air mixes down from the foothills.

Temperatures also climb sharply. Highs reach near 70°F Thursday, a notable warm-up compared to the chilly morning temperatures in the 30s.

Residents should avoid outdoor burning and delay activities that produce sparks. Secure loose outdoor items as wind gusts strengthen during the afternoon.

The warmer, breezy pattern continues into the end of the workweek. Friday brings partly sunny skies with highs near 73°F, followed by even milder air Saturday with temperatures reaching around 75°F.

However, the early spring warmth will not last long. A colder system approaching the Front Range could bring rain changing to snow by late Saturday night, with breezy conditions continuing into Sunday.

For now, the biggest concern remains Thursday’s fire weather risk across the Denver metro area.
