Springfield, Illinois – Residents across southeast Illinois are waking up to a Tornado Watch this morning as storms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes move through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, a Tornado Watch remains in effect until 11 a.m. CDT Wednesday for parts of southeastern Illinois where atmospheric conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorm development. Forecasters warn that storms forming in the region could produce wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph, hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter, and a few isolated tornadoes.

Communities including Charleston, Effingham, Olney, and Vandalia fall within the watch area. Drivers along Interstate 57, Interstate 70, and U.S. Highway 45 may encounter sudden heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and rapidly changing visibility as storms move through during the morning hours.

Emergency officials urge residents to monitor weather alerts closely and be prepared to seek shelter quickly if warnings are issued. The safest location during a tornado warning is an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows.

Storm conditions may continue shifting through the late morning as the system tracks east. Additional warnings could be issued quickly if storms intensify across southeast Illinois.
