Huntsville, Alabama – Residents across the Tennessee Valley have a narrow window to prepare before a line of strong to severe thunderstorms moves through northern Alabama this afternoon, with the most intense impacts expected in the Huntsville area between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, storms are expected to develop and organize into a line beginning around 2 p.m. in northwest Alabama before tracking east through the region until about 10 p.m. The greatest local risk centers on damaging wind gusts that could exceed 60 mph, capable of knocking down tree limbs and causing isolated power outages.

Communities including Florence, Russellville and Fayetteville, Tennessee could see storms between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The line is expected to reach Huntsville, Cullman and surrounding Madison County communities between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. before pushing east toward Stevenson and Fort Payne from 7 p.m. through 10 p.m.

Forecasters say the tornado threat remains low, but brief spin-ups cannot be ruled out within the line of storms. Heavy downpours may also lead to localized flooding in poor drainage areas and along low-lying roads.

Emergency managers urge residents to identify a safe shelter location now and ensure multiple ways to receive warnings, including phone alerts, weather radios and local media updates.

Additional watches or warnings could be issued as storms begin organizing later this afternoon.
