Buffalo, New York – Outdoor conditions across western New York will turn noticeably windier through the afternoon as temperatures surge well above normal, bringing springlike warmth and gusty winds to the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, winds will strengthen steadily through the day with peak gusts approaching 30 to 35 mph by late afternoon, especially across areas along and west of the Interstate 90 corridor.

Temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 60s across much of western New York, including Buffalo, Rochester, Batavia, and Jamestown. Some inland areas across the Genesee Valley and Finger Lakes could briefly reach the upper 60s to near 70 degrees before cooler air moves in later tonight.

Communities immediately downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario may run slightly cooler due to lake influence, while higher terrain east of Lake Ontario—near Watertown and Lowville—is expected to remain in the 50s to lower 60s.

The strengthening winds could create choppy conditions on area lakes and minor travel impacts for high-profile vehicles along exposed highways such as Interstate 90 and Interstate 81.

Conditions remain dry today, but residents should secure loose outdoor items as winds increase through the afternoon. Cooler air will return later this week as the next weather system approaches the region.
