Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Strong thunderstorms could begin developing across western Pennsylvania as early as 8 a.m. Wednesday, with multiple rounds of storms possible through the evening and damaging winds posing the greatest threat.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and northern West Virginia are under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms today. Forecasters warn storms could produce damaging wind gusts, large hail, and isolated tornadoes, especially as storms redevelop later in the afternoon.
The first round of showers and storms is expected during the morning hours, though stronger severe storms may develop mid-afternoon into the evening as the atmosphere becomes more unstable.
Cities including Pittsburgh, Wheeling, New Philadelphia, Cambridge, and Morgantown could see stronger storms later today, particularly along major travel corridors such as Interstate 70, Interstate 79, and Interstate 376.
Damaging winds remain the primary hazard, but forecasters note that a few storms could become significant, producing larger hail or isolated tornadoes if conditions align during peak heating later today.
Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts closely and ensure multiple ways to receive watches and warnings, especially as storms may strengthen quickly during the afternoon.
The severe weather threat should gradually decrease later tonight after storms move east, though additional alerts may be issued if stronger storms begin organizing across the Ohio Valley.
