Michigan – Rain taps steadily across rooftops in western Michigan this morning as swollen creeks and drainage ditches struggle to keep up. Streets in parts of Grand Rapids already show pooling water, and meteorologists warn that more rain could push local waterways higher through the morning hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Flood Watch remains in effect through late morning across much of west-central Michigan, including Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, Allegan, and Barry counties. Periods of steady rain and isolated thunderstorms may produce enough rainfall to trigger flooding in low-lying areas and neighborhoods with poor drainage.
Drivers across the US-131 and I-196 corridors should watch for standing water during heavier downpours. Urban intersections and underpasses tend to flood first. Slow down and avoid driving through water-covered roads where depth is difficult to judge.
Meteorologists are also tracking a brief freezing rain threat across central Lower Michigan, where colder air may create a light glaze of ice. While the icing risk stays mainly north and east of Grand Rapids, travelers heading toward Baldwin, Clare, or Harrison could encounter slick pavement.
Additional rainfall today may cause rivers that are already elevated to continue rising over the next few days. Officials say some rivers across southwest Lower Michigan could approach flood stage if heavier rainfall persists.
Conditions improve later as clouds gradually break and colder air settles into the region. Sunshine returns Thursday with cooler but calmer weather across western Michigan.
The pattern turns active again by Friday as another system brings rain changing to snow showers, followed by additional chances for snow this weekend. The swings between rain and colder air are typical for March as winter slowly loses its grip.
