Glens Falls, NY – Rising rivers and the threat of ice jams could develop across parts of the Adirondacks and Mohawk Valley beginning this afternoon, as rain combines with melting snow to push water levels higher through Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Flood Watch takes effect at 2 p.m. Wednesday and remains active through Thursday afternoon for the southwest Adirondacks, western Mohawk Valley, and the Upper Hudson Valley. Communities including Glens Falls, Saratoga Springs, Herkimer, Johnstown, North Creek, and Old Forge are included in the alert.
Mild temperatures overnight are accelerating snowmelt across northern New York. As moderate to locally heavy rain moves in Wednesday afternoon and continues into the evening, runoff will increase quickly in creeks, streams, and rivers. The added flow may break up remaining river ice, which can jam in narrow channels and cause sudden water rises nearby.
Low-lying roads, poor drainage areas, and neighborhoods near smaller waterways are the most vulnerable. Local emergency managers warn residents to keep storm drains clear and avoid driving across flooded roadways.
River levels will continue to be monitored closely through Thursday. Additional flood warnings may be issued if ice jams form or waterways rise faster than expected.
