New Bern, North Carolina – Residents across eastern North Carolina will see summerlike heat Wednesday with temperatures pushing the upper 80s, before a cold front brings rain and a noticeable cooldown late Thursday into Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, inland communities across eastern North Carolina could reach 88 to 89°F Wednesday afternoon, including Greenville, Kinston, Kenansville, and New Bern. Coastal areas such as Morehead City, Ocracoke, and the Outer Banks will remain cooler, generally in the low to mid-70s, due to the influence of the Atlantic.
Rain develops Thursday as the front moves across the region. Forecasters expect 0.5 to 1 inch of rainfall across inland counties, including Greenville, Kinston, Plymouth, and Wallace, while coastal communities like Morehead City, Cedar Island, and Manteo may see around 0.25 to 0.5 inches.
Behind the front, cooler air arrives quickly. Early Friday morning temperatures could drop to 33°F in Hamilton, 35°F in Greenville, 37°F in New Bern, and near 40°F along the immediate coast, marking a sharp change from the mid-week warmth.
Drivers should expect occasional wet roads Thursday as rain moves through eastern North Carolina. Conditions improve heading into the weekend, with drier weather expected after the front exits the region.
