Green Bay, Wisconsin – Drivers across northern and central Wisconsin could encounter snow-covered and icy roads during the Wednesday morning commute as a widespread wintry system spreads across the region tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, light snow across northern Wisconsin will intensify overnight while a rain and freezing rain mix develops across central and east-central parts of the state. Conditions are expected to transition to mainly snow by Wednesday morning, with winter weather headlines in effect until 1 p.m. Wednesday for much of the region.

Forecasters say the heaviest snow will fall across north-central and far northeast Wisconsin, where 5 to 8 inches of accumulation could occur near areas such as Rhinelander, Eagle River, and Iron Mountain. Communities farther south including Wausau, Stevens Point, and Shawano may see 1 to 2 inches, while the Fox Valley and lakeshore areas like Green Bay, Appleton, and Manitowoc could see around 0.5 to 1 inch along with light ice accumulation up to 0.05 inches.

The mixture of snow and freezing drizzle could create slick untreated roads and icy sidewalks, particularly during the early morning commute across central and eastern Wisconsin. Snow-covered roads are more likely farther north where heavier snowfall develops overnight.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and watch for changing road conditions late tonight through Wednesday morning. Additional updates and warnings may be issued as the winter system continues moving across Wisconsin.
