Roselawn, Indiana – A confirmed large tornado is on the ground in northwest Indiana Tuesday evening, threatening communities in Jasper and Newton counties as it moves east at roughly 25 mph and puts residents in immediate danger.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago/Romeoville, the tornado was confirmed by trained weather spotters at 7:26 p.m. Tuesday near Roselawn, just east of Lake Village. The warning remains in effect until 8:15 p.m. CDT for northeastern Newton County and northwestern Jasper County. Officials classified the situation as a “particularly dangerous situation,” signaling a high potential for significant damage.

Communities including Roselawn and DeMotte lie directly in the storm’s path. Drivers along Interstate 65 and nearby rural highways could quickly encounter debris, reduced visibility, and rapidly changing conditions as heavy rain wraps around the circulation.

The storm is also capable of producing hail up to 2.75 inches in diameter. Emergency managers warn that mobile homes may be destroyed and that homes, businesses, and vehicles could suffer major damage if the tornado remains on the ground.

Residents should move immediately to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows and cover your head with blankets, a mattress, or a helmet if available.

Heavy rain may obscure the tornado, especially after dark, making it difficult to see. Warnings remain in effect until 8:15 p.m., and additional alerts could follow if the storm continues tracking east across Jasper County.
