Burlington, Iowa – Strong thunderstorms developing across southeast Iowa Tuesday afternoon could quickly intensify, bringing the risk of tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail through late evening across multiple counties along the Mississippi River.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Tornado Watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. Tuesday for Des Moines, Henry, Jefferson, Lee, Louisa, and Van Buren counties. Forecasters say conditions are favorable for rotating thunderstorms capable of producing brief tornadoes as a warm, unstable air mass moves north across the region.
Communities including Burlington, Mount Pleasant, Fairfield, Fort Madison, Keokuk, and Wapello could see storms develop rapidly during the late afternoon and evening commute. Gusts over 60 mph and hail large enough to damage vehicles or roofs are also possible. U.S. Highway 61 and sections of U.S. 34 may see sudden downpours and reduced visibility during stronger cells.
Emergency managers urge residents to monitor weather alerts and be ready to move to a basement or interior room on the lowest floor if warnings are issued. Charging mobile devices and identifying a safe shelter location ahead of storms can save critical minutes if a tornado warning is triggered.
Storm activity may continue across southeast Iowa through late Tuesday evening as the system tracks toward western Illinois. Additional warnings could be issued with little notice if stronger storms develop.
