Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Strong to severe thunderstorms could bring damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes across parts of eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and northern West Virginia on Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, multiple rounds of thunderstorms are expected throughout the day, beginning early Wednesday morning and continuing into the evening hours.

The first round of storms may develop between roughly 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. Wednesday, mainly affecting areas north and west of Pittsburgh. These storms could produce strong wind gusts and brief heavy rain, with a limited tornado threat.

A second and potentially stronger round of storms may develop later in the afternoon and evening, with severe weather possible from around 8 a.m. through 10 p.m. Wednesday across the region.

Forecasters say the primary hazard will be damaging winds, which could produce gusts capable of knocking down tree limbs and causing scattered power outages.

Some storms may also produce large hail and isolated tornadoes, particularly if thunderstorms strengthen during the late afternoon.

Communities across eastern Ohio, including areas near New Philadelphia and Cambridge, along with western Pennsylvania cities such as Pittsburgh and Butler, may experience the strongest storms during the day.

Drivers traveling along major corridors including Interstate 79, Interstate 76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike), Interstate 70, and Interstate 77 could encounter sudden heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and reduced visibility during storm activity.

Because storms may occur during both morning and evening commute periods, transportation disruptions and brief power outages are possible.

The storms may also affect students traveling to school, commuters, and workers across the Ohio Valley, particularly if severe weather develops during peak travel hours.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts, enable emergency alerts, and review severe weather safety plans ahead of Wednesday’s storms.
