Toledo, Ohio – Heavy rain and thunderstorms moving into the Ohio Valley Tuesday night could quickly worsen ongoing flooding problems and push several rivers higher across Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania through Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service Ohio River Forecast Center, a widespread 0.75 to 1.25 inches of rain is expected across much of the region over the next 48 hours, with isolated totals exceeding 2 inches possible across the northern Ohio Valley. That heavier band includes northwest Ohio, where the Maumee River basin could see renewed rises.

Flooding is already ongoing in parts of Indiana and southern Illinois, and additional rainfall may prolong those impacts while expanding concerns into Ohio. Water levels at several river gauges across the region are projected to reach Action Stage, meaning rivers are elevated and could begin affecting low-lying areas.

In northwest Ohio, communities near Toledo, Defiance, and Napoleon should monitor water levels closely along the Maumee River and its tributaries. Local emergency officials warn that heavy rain falling in a short period could cause rapid rises in creeks, ponding on roads, and minor flooding in flood-prone areas.

Drivers should avoid water-covered roadways and allow extra time during Wednesday morning travel as thunderstorms move through.

Additional river advisories and flood alerts may be issued as rainfall continues through midweek.
