Charleston, West Virginia – Thunderstorms could begin developing across West Virginia this afternoon, with some storms strengthening quickly and producing damaging winds or hail before a more active round of severe weather arrives Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, scattered showers and thunderstorms may develop between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday as a cold front approaches the Appalachian region. While many storms will remain ordinary, isolated cells could become strong to severe, producing damaging wind gusts or pockets of hail.

Communities including Charleston, Huntington, Beckley, Parkersburg and Clarksburg could see storms during the afternoon and early evening hours. Brief heavy rainfall may also reduce visibility on major travel routes such as Interstate 64, Interstate 77 and Interstate 79.

The threat increases Wednesday as additional energy moves into the region. Forecasters warn that storms developing between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. Wednesday may become more widespread, with the potential for damaging winds, hail and possibly a few tornadoes along with heavier downpours.

Residents should monitor weather alerts and ensure they have multiple ways to receive warnings as conditions evolve.

Additional watches or warnings could be issued as storms develop across West Virginia through Wednesday evening.
